    Unemployment Compensation benefit provided by the state of Ohio is a free service.
    Ohio law requires that the workers of the state who are eligible for Ohio unemployment benefits should meet certain eligibility criteria. A temporary compensation is provided to such workers under the Ohio law. Each state in the country administers an unemployment insurance program that could be different from the unemployment insurance program of other states. As per the Ohio Unemployment Office Information the value of the unemployment benefits provided by this state is formulated by calculating the level of unemployment in the State of Ohio. The period for which such compensation is provided for the workers also differ from state to state.


    According to the Ohio Unemployment Office Information the eligibility for Ohio Unemployment Benefits and the basic requirements for collecting are as follows:
    • One must have been gainfully employed for an established period of time. This is referred to as the ‘base period’.
    • One will be eligible for compensation if under Ohio law it is determined that you are unemployed through no fault of your own.
    • The Ohio Unemployment Office Information also states that one should be able to answer questions concerning your continued eligibility to the satisfaction of Commission.
    • It is also mandatory that during the claim period one must report any job offers, refusal of work or any earnings from work
    There are four options available for an unemployed worker for filing for compensation. They are:

    1. If the claimant is residing in a state other Ohio, he or she should visit the state’s unemployment office to report.
    2. If the claimant in residing in a state other Ohio he or she can call the toll free number 1 (800) 251-6237 for information pertaining to registering the claim.
    3. The claimant is eligible to register by telephone. He or she should call the toll free number 1 (877) 644-6562 (OHIO JOB).
    4. The claimant can visit the nearest Ohio local reporting office. For information on this visit the website – http://jfs.ohio.gov/

    Document necessary to apply for the benefit
    1. Two forms of identification. This could be a driver’s license, photo ID, pay stub from the last employer, social security card or organization card.
    2. Name, address and the telephone number of the last place worked.
    3. Any additional information such as W-2 forms, pay stubs from the company/companies where the person was employed within the past 18 months.

    Filing by Telephone: If the person chooses to file the claim by telephone the information listed above should by handy.

    Additional Information:

    • The applicant should submit a DD-214(Member 4) if he or she is separated in the past 18 months from the US armed forces.
    • The applicant must submit SF-8 and SF-50 if her or she is separated in the past 18 months from federal civilian employment.
    • The name/names and address/addresses of the employer should be provided if the person was employed out of state in the past 18 months.
